Boston, Massachusetts - Old-Fashioned Soft Pumpkin Cookies

As soon as the weather turns crisp, I start craving pumpkin in any form possible from ice cream to smoothies, pies, you name it. One of my favorite go-to recipes is for old-fashioned soft pumpkin cookies. I have been making these for years and bringing them to friends as gifts and without fail, they always ask me for the recipe. I promise you that if you are a pumpkin fan, these will not disappoint.

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter (1 stick), softened
1 cup pure pumpkin
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease baking sheets.

Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in medium bowl.

Beat sugar and butter in large mixing bowl until well blended.

Beat in pumpkin, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Gradually beat in flour mixture a little at a time

Drop by rounded tablespoons onto prepared baking sheets. I always use parchment paper so I don't have to grease the pans and it makes clean up a cinch.

Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until edges are firm. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes and then remove to cool completely.

Glaze:
2 cups sifted powdered sugar
3 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine all glaze ingredients in a small bowl

Instead of a pastry bag, I use a small ziplock sandwich bag, which I put inside a glass for easy filling. Simply throw away when you're finished.

Cut a tiny hole in one corner of the bag (thank you to my mother for modeling how its done below):

Drizzle glaze over cookies

I hope you enjoy these soft pumpkin cookies as much as I do.

I wish all my American readers a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Reims, France - A Weekend in the Champagne Region

As I am home in Boston this week for the Thanksgiving holiday, here is a guest blog from my dear friend Patricia Kriz...

Some have sky diving or an African Safari trip on their bucket list, but for me it was visiting the Champagne houses in France. I felt like a child waiting for Christmas the week preceding the trip. In a weekend we could only get a snap shot of the region, but we hired a fabulous driver from Taxi de la Marne who helped arrange all our house appointments, had so much knowledge of the area, and helped us cover more ground than we thought possible. He made all the difference in our fabulous weekend! There are over 5,000 champagne houses in the  Champagne Region, and I enjoyed visiting the smaller producers most.

As our one big house experience, we did visit the house of Dom Perignon and Moet Chandon for their tour and tasting. Their champagne caves are incredible and 17 miles long! I am glad we did this house, but would only recommend visiting one big house and then would suggest spending your time in the small boutique houses.

House highlights that I tasted, loved and bought: Alexander Penet, Henri Giraud, Alain Vesselle, J.Perard Pere et Fils, P. Lancelot-Royer, and Paul Bara.

I would be hard pressed to tell you which was my favorite, as each was different in taste and style. For any lovers of Champagne, this is a weekend you will love!

London, England - Banca Restaurant

How utterly stunning is the poured liquid metal bar?!?!
Last week I was invited to Italian restaurant, Banca, in London's Mayfair, for the launch of Aperitivo: derived from the classic pre-dinner aperitivo tradition found in Milan’s smartest bars and restaurants.

Silver leaf ceiling and amazing crystal chandeliers

From 5pm-7:30pm on Tuesday to Friday, classic Italian aperitivo nibbles are laid across Banca’s impressive long bar that spans across the entire length of the restaurant. All dishes are bite-sized, designed to be easily consumed in the early evening, standing and socialising at the bar.

Guests can enjoy one of Banca’s Italian cocktails, such as the Negroni, Aperol Spritz or Bellini, as they graze.

If you're in London, and jetting off to northern Italy is not in the cards, Banca is the closest thing to the Italian aperitivo tradition and a fun place to stop for a pre-dinner prosecco and a snack.
